David Rasico’s Bio
Writing
my own bio or supplying info for such is very much like writing my life story.
Where do I start? The countless clubs? The countless gigs? The countless bands throughout
the years have been a lifetime of musical education. Terrific musicians and
singers have been plentiful over the past thirty years for me at this point. I
was born (9/6/60) and raised in the Memphis,
TN area. I played on a local
radio show one night a week at the age of ten years old. At twelve years old I
began working at the local VFW on weekends with the "Charlie Fritz
Band". At the age of fourteen I started working six nights a week, seven
sets per night (9 to 4) in full tuxedo. After a couple of years with the
"Loman Craig Group", I left Hernando's Hide-Away for roadwork with
Epic recording artist and member of Charlie Rich's band, Susan Hudson. (I was
on the road with her in Columbus,
MS when Elvis died {8/16/77}).
The band broke up and she broke down that day. I (we) went back to Memphis at
that time and I immediately went back to Hernando's to join The Jimmy Busby
Band as his keyboardist and bandleader. I was there (9 to 4, six nights a week
in full tuxedo) for three and a half years. This led to lots of gigs with local
Memphis area
bands (Ben Wages, Tiny Bond and the Bondsmen, Danny Bryant and Butch Baker, The
Coon Elder/Brenda Patterson Band {Mercury Records}) to name a few. I acquired
the Hammond B-3
organ from STAX Studio (Isaac Hayes, Booker T. and the M.G.s, Al Green etc.)
and became well known and liked for my B-3 skills. I moved to the Tulsa, OK area for a year
or more, working with an instructor at the Hank
Thompson School
of Music named Tiny Davis.
Tiny taught me plenty about perseverance and control at his gig at a pretty
rough joint on the outskirts of town. This led me to the St. Louis, MO area,
which landed me at the Dorsett Inn for three years (9 to 1, five nights a week)
with a wonderful, hardnosed, ex-cop, drummer/bandleader, named Fred Pierce (Tom
Paul and the Glaser Bros., Kingston Trio) who became a lifelong and most
trusted friend. Thinking I could do better and following my road fever, I left
Dorsett to play in a couple of regional road bands, The Donna Nowak Band and The
Rich Landers Band. Rich wrote some old Red Sovine hits and a smash for Vern
Gosdin (Your Bedroom Eyes). I traveled to Canada
twice with Rich and eventually to Anchorage,
AK on a three-week gig, which
lasted four and a half months at the Sawmill Restaurant and Nightclub. Rich was
on AMI Records out of Nashville,
TN and had previously taken us to
the studio there and recorded several of his songs. We did several package
shows with Nashville
recording artists throughout my time in his band. One in particular was with
Johnny Paycheck somewhere in Missouri.
I was approached by Ken Lowe of Lowe's Theater in Branson, MO
that night which eventually led me there for five years. We did an hour and a
"star" did an hour, seven days a week, two shows a day, May through October.
I met and opened for lots of big names in the business at Lowe's such as
Loretta Lynne, Jerry Reed, Johnny Russell, Billy Walker, Porter Waggoner,
Ronnie Milsap, Dotty West, Ray Price and my now good friend Tommy Overstreet. I
worked at the local recording studio in Branson (Ironsides) and recorded
several albums with T.O. as well as many others including Brewer and Shipley
(One Toke Over the Line). I did some roadwork with T.O. also to include the
Johnny Heinz Radio and TV show in Dallas, TX and a package show with Johnny Rodriguez in Amarillo. All this was
great experience but road fever set in and I left Branson to play Rock and Roll
in an Atlantic Records project known as "Great Southern Railroad".
Lots of roadwork, concerts and pre-production studios kept this loco-motive on
track for seven years. This eventually derailed and we formed the band "Arkansas" with Jeff Cease (The Black Crowes) and
Doug Huffman (Boston).
During the life of this band, we opened for Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad Company, Joe
Walsh/Glen Frye, Nightranger, Eddy Money and Foghat to name a few. This short
lived band took me to Little Rock, AR to work with my lifelong friend and music
manager/mogul Butch Stone (Black Oak Arkansas,
Krokus) at his concert venue, Riverfront Amphitheater. Seven years later, back
to Memphis for a few gigs, back to St. Louis for a few gigs, I moved to the Los
Angeles, CA area to play the blues on my B-3 with a top-notch band named Karen
Lawrence and Blue by Nature (B.B. King's, House of Blues, Cozy's, Perq's etc.).
This brings me up to the present (and drained from re-living my past thanks to
this bio/autobio). All throughout this experience, I have done piano bar work,
performing easy listening material such as Elton John, Billy Joel, Ray Charles,
Billy Ocean, Lionel Ritchie, James Taylor, Tony Joe White, Brook Benton, George
Benson, Lou Rawls etc. As a closing statement I can only say I have become very
good and have been very lucky to have known and be associated with such a
wonderful and valuable bunch of unique individuals. I welcome any opportunity
to perform and demonstrate my talents.
